Subdivisions may be used, there is no need to commit subdivisions before export. Some of us are just born different, innit. For extruding, use the new Extrude function which this plugin adds to AC3D's Surface menu (see below for more info). Re the "possibly more intuitive interface (typoed untuitive first here and nearly left it in as appropriate to Blender, I anticipate a few replies regarding Blender's latest version being better, etc etc, but the way people divide into groups between Blender and not-blender UI's is remarkably like the way people divide into mouselook vs over-the-shoulder modes in SL. The advantages of using Sketchup over blender to make the model in the first place is a more intuitive user interface (for some of us), plus there is usually a figure at the origin which also helps with judging the scale of things you make. However, the mesh produced by Sketchup is very over-complicated, and really would benefit from running through Blender first.
You can make animations for SL using it, but I don't think you can rig an SL avatar in it, maybe tho.

The interface is nicer than that of Wings, and Zora Spoonhamer's exporter allows you to take good advantage of program features which the Wings exporter doesn't full subdivision capabilities, cutting and extrusion of faces, etc. Daz3D is old, and you should go get Daz Studio 4. If you're willing to spend some money (under USD100), AC3D is a good place to start. Inside this, you will find a DAE file which, with a little work on the materials, can be imported into SL, though I haven't done this for quite some time now and don't know if it will still produce a satisfactory result. I don't have any experience with AC3D, but it looks like it can make SL meshes, and I swear i have seen others using it. Just edit the prim that the script is in, select Group: to the same group as the land, and click Share with Group. Not as easy as Poser or Second Life, but it has plenty of good features.

The native export from Sketchip is a KMZ file, which is actually a zip file with a different extension. Groups: If your land is owned by a group, you will need to use a prim instead of a HUD. AC3D is a commercial product that makes 3D modelling quite easy. There's still a free online version of it, but I don't know if you can export models using it.
